Ruby Ann

Hailing from Coimbra, Portugal, Ruby Ann originally saw success with her first band The Boppin' Boozers. Ruby Ann branched out on her own in 2005.  Since then, she has spent her time living in both the U.S. (Chicago and New York) and France.  She has made her way across the continents as a much sought after solo attraction.

Her tour schedule has included some of the hottest Rockabilly/Rock & Roll/Country music festivals that Europe has to offer.  She has also had many successful appearances in the U.S. and Japan.  This has helped to win her an enthusiastic fanbase the world wide.

Her first solo offering in 2007 was from Los Angeles based WILD Records, "Train to Satanville" and the follow up release "Mama's Back" was with U.K. based Rhythm Bomb Records.  With this, the chance of you seeing her in concert has greatly increased.  If you are lucky enough to catch her live, you will be able to get a taste of what fans can't seem to get enough of and what has promoters clamoring to book her.  Her third solo album "Running Wild" by Rhythm Bomb was released in May 2014 and is already a huge hit.

She has a great presence both on and off stage and a personality that goes on for miles or kilometers depending on our locale.  This leaves little question as to what so many have found endearing about Ruby Ann.

This is what Big Sandy had to say about this Rhythm Bomb Records star:

"There's an age-old adage that the third time's the charm and with "Running Wild", her third solo release, Ruby Ann has proven just how utterly charming she can be.  Continuing a trend of increasingly impressive releases, this Portugese songstress has really hit her stride on this album.  More so than on any of her previous offerings, this collection of recordings dramatically showcases her versatility as a vocalist and displays her talent as an interpreter of songs.  Featuring a blend of carefully selected covers and custom written true to life originals, "Running Wild" truly has something for everyone and serves as a reminder of just why Ruby Ann continues to be one of the most in demand and top selling artists in the Rockin' scene today."

How would you describe your style of music?

Rockabilly, with a hand full of other styles.

How did you get into this style of music?

I started listening to Rockabilly when I was 15,  it was a natural process.  At 21, we started the Boppin' Boozers for fun.  I could have never imagined that I would still be playing today and making this my life.

How did you come up with your band name?

I was one of the few girls who wore red lipstick in my hometown of Coimbra, Portugal.  My name is Ana, red and ruby were a match!  Then in came the Warren Smith song "Rock'n Roll Ruby", it was the story of my life.  "All I want to do is rock a little bit more."

What is the background of your band members?

Nuno and Pedro were part of the Boppin' Boozers, they are both from Portugal.  Nuno played with the Tennessee Boys along with some other bands.  Pedro is also the drummer for Carl and the Rhythm All Stars.  Gautier is originally from France but now lives in the U.K., he has also played with several bands.  All of them have projects on the side.  I sometimes use other musicians, depending on where I am going to play.

Who are they as individuals?

They are my best friends and great talented people.

How long has your band been together?

Ruby Ann and The Boppin' Boozers started in 1998.  I have been flying solo since 2004.

What do you like the most about the Rockabilly scene?

The music!

Who are your music idols, who influences your music?

I am influenced by everything that I see and hear consciously or not. Music idols?  Too many to mention, but the first female voice that touched me was Patsy Cline.

What future events do you have planned?

So many plans.....The new album "Running Wild" was just released.  We have a lot of offers to play festivals, sadly we can't make it to all of them.  A few gigs here and there and we are very excited to be at the High Rockabilly in Spain this year.

Do your band members have day jobs or do they make their dime as professional musicians?

Nuno is a professional bass player, Pedro is also now a full time musician.  Gautier has a regular job.  I also work for Rhythm Bomb Records, I'm kinda living the dream.

If day jobs, what type of work do they do?

Gautier plays video games for a living, or something like that and I am not even kidding!

Do you or any of your band members collect records?

We all do, we are not crazy collectors because we can't afford the real deal all of the time.  We sure do like those 45's though.

If so, what do you collect?

I like to think that I collect good music....let's just leave it at that.

What is your most memorale experience at a concert?

Have had a few, but recently I was luck enough to share the stage with Carl Mann for the second time.  It's always cool to sing with one of your idols.  I will be singing with Wanda Jackson in September, but we are still working on it.  I am pretty excited about that.

What was your funniest memory at a concert?

Oh boy, so many....imagine being on the road with your best friends.  On stage, we don't need to talk much.  A look is enough to know what we are thinking, we laugh a lot together.

Is there anything that you would like to add about yourself or your band?

I am blessed with opportunities and I am learning everyday.  I'm thankful for everyone that still likes to hear us play since 1998.

Last but not least, what makes this band tick?

You would have to ask the people that come out to our shows.
