How would you describe your style of music?
As individuals we all like varied styles of music however we all share the same passion for Rockabilly. Our style is heavily influenced by Rockabilly, Blues and early Country music. We pick our repertoire carefully with all kinds of different styles within Rockabilly itself. This includes Boppers', 'Strollers' and 'Jivers'.
How did you get into this style of music?
What is the background of your band members? -----
Who are they as individuals? -------------
Sharna-Mae has grown up with Country and Rockabilly music all her life along with guitarist and younger brother Scott with their Dad being in The Hicksville Bombers and Country Cattin'. This has had a massive influence on their music choices but still allowing them to have their individual tastes. Danny has also been involved with Rockabilly music from a young age and he is now a DJ (Rockin Dan) on the scene so he has a great understanding of different artists and songs and also brings a vast amount of new music to the band to try out. James has been into music all his life with being brought up on British 80s pop culture from a young age but finding his feet with varied genres including rock, pop, folk, punk and blues. He came across Johnny Cash and just fell in love with the 'sound' that Cash gave and this then introduced him to early Rockabilly music.
How did you come up with your band name?
Choosing a band name was quite a long process as we just couldn't decide and we wanted to choose the right name that would last and leave a mark on people. A lot of people were very helpful when it came to choosing a name and giving us a lot of suggestions. Sharna-Mae ended up writing a status on social media so that all of our friends and fans could help and offer us suggestions and this led to over 100 possible band names however with a few people saying 'Sharna-Mae and The Mayhems' we felt that was the right one.
Where can people purchase your music and or merchandise?
We will be recording our first studio album in February 2016 at Western Star Studios in the UK run by Alan Wilson, this will be an original album with all brand new original material. You can follow us on Facebook under Sharna-Mae and The Mayhems to keep updated.
How long has your band been together?
We have only been together a few months now but Sharna-Mae and James have been performing together for nearly 2 years.
What do you like the most about the Rockabilly scene?
We all love the Rockabilly scene as it's just one big family. You can go to a gig and be welcomed by everybody and it's great feeling seeing a dance floor packed with people from all backgrounds bopping, jiving and strolling the night away. We love the cars, the fashion and the modern bands but it is mainly all about the music. The music is a way of life and that alone brings people together on a weekend and allows them to express themselves in many ways and means.
Who are your music idols, who influences your music?
All of us have our individual idols and favourite artists/bands including the new modern bands on the circuit but as a band, because we are female fronted, our sound, writing style and playing style is influenced by the likes of Wanda Jackson, Ruth Brown, Brenda Lee, Janis Martin and the rebellious Sparkle Moore. But then we still have the influences of artists/bands from Hank Williams and Johnny Horton to the likes of Gene Vincent and Eddie Cochran and everyone in between.
What future events do you have planned?
We have a lot of gigs now rolling in for 2016 and this includes the album being recorded in February. Our biggest gig next year will probably have to be the Rockabilly Rave as this is the biggest Rockabilly weekender in the UK and the world. It attracts people from all around the globe including the artists. The biggest names in Rockabilly at the minute have played the Rockabilly Rave; these include the likes of Big Sandy and His Flyrite Boys, The Bellfuries, Scotty Baker, The Rhythm Shakers and also Rocky Burnette and Joe Clay so to be playing this festival is a great pleasure and opportunity. We will also be playing the Americana festival which is the pure American heartbeat of the UK. It's a great family run festival which invites anyone who loves anything American to come along and experience it!
Do your band members have day jobs or do they make their dime as professional musicians? If day jobs, what type of work do they do?
All of us in the band would dream of being full time musicians but unfortunately we all have day jobs as well! Sharna-Mae is currently a waitress at a Manor House called Doddington Hall and a make-up rep for Younique but is going to continue her education at university to work in the performing arts industry. Scott Brown has just finished school and is now going on to study music at college. Danny has finished school as well and has now got an apprenticeship as a plumber, he is a well respected Rockabilly DJ on the circuit. James used to be a drum teacher and now works in a music shop and is planning on going to University in September 2016 to study Music further and to train to be a teacher.
Do you or any of your band members collect records? If so, what do you/ they collect?
We all have record collections but mainly LPs whereas Danny, as he's a DJ, he is a big collector as well as his dad Mark and is always on the look out for new/old material to play.
What is your most memorable experience at a concert?
Our first gig was at the Americana Festival in the UK and that was a very special moment for us introducing the band and our own songs.
What was your funniest memory at a concert?
This would have to be when Scott forgot his belt for his trousers at one of our gigs and he had to play guitar trying to keep his trousers up, it was so funny!
Is there anything that you would like to add about yourself or your band?
Just to please check out our band page on Facebook and to keep updated with our gigs, YouTube videos and new album coming out next year.
Last but not least, what makes this band tick?
Id say being a young band makes the band stand out and that we all have a lot in common and get along really well. We also have relations within the band Sharna-Mae and Scott are brother and sister. James and Sharna-Mae are a couple and Danny is a great friend and makes the band feel complete.
Oh boy, I am sure that many of you cats and kittens reading this have not heard of this new band yet. I was first turned onto them by Darrel Higham when he pointed out that they were on Youtube. I saw Sharna-Mae and James doing a cover of "Dig A Hole". Sharna-Mae has a powerful and versatile voice and she is backed by some talented young musicians. I got to see them perform in the U.K. at a Rave jam session and they were outstanding. If the future crop of Rockabilly kids are anything like these new comers, I see a bright future for our Rockin' scene. I look forward to seeing them here on this side of the pond at a weekender soon. Check out this link and get a taste of their talent. This was a Rave jam https://youtu.be/G0F63aOvYzI
